You do not need a craft room or a big budget to make your home look festive. These twelve ideas use simple materials, most of them from a craft store or your kitchen, and each one can be finished in an afternoon.

What you need

The 12 ideas

  1. Paper star garland. Cut stars from cardstock and thread them on twine. Our step-by-step guide is linked below.
  2. Dried orange slice garland. Slice oranges about 5 mm thick, pat them dry and bake at about 100 °C (210 °F) for 2 to 3 hours, turning once. Thread them on twine with a few cinnamon sticks.
  3. Salt dough ornaments. Roll, cut, bake and paint. Great for kids and they last for years.
  4. Snowy pine cones. Brush the tips of pine cones with white paint and add a little glitter while it is still wet.
  5. Mason jar lanterns. Wrap twine around a jar, add a sprig of greenery and put an LED tea light inside.
  6. Cinnamon stick candle wrap. Glue cinnamon sticks around a thick candle jar and tie with twine. Use LED candles if you leave it unattended.
  7. Felt tree ornaments. Cut two small trees from green felt, stitch the edges and add a loop of twine.
  8. Wooden bead garland. Thread large wooden beads onto string in a pattern of two colors.
  9. Twig stars. Glue five similar twigs into a star shape and tie with twine.
  10. Paper snowflakes. Fold a square of paper three times, cut shapes into the edges and unfold. Tape them to windows.
  11. Yarn pom-pom garland. Wrap yarn around a fork, tie it in the middle, cut the loops and fluff.
  12. Greenery table runner. Lay fresh or faux greenery along the middle of the table and tuck in pine cones and small ornaments.

Tips

Pick one color palette (for example green, white and gold) so all handmade pieces look like they belong together.
Use LED tea lights near paper and dried fruit.
