Salt dough ornaments are one of the easiest Christmas crafts. You only need flour, salt and water, and the finished pieces last for years if you seal them.

What you need

How to make them

  1. Mix 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour, 1 cup (about 250 g) fine salt and about 3/4 cup (180 ml) water. Knead for a few minutes until smooth. Add a little water or flour if needed.
  2. Roll the dough out to about 6 mm (1/4 in) thick.
  3. Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Use a straw to make a hole near the top for the string.
  4. Place the shapes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake at about 120 °C (250 °F) for 2 to 3 hours, depending on thickness, until completely hard. Turn them once.
  6. Let them cool fully, then paint with acrylic paint.
  7. Seal with a clear varnish on both sides and thread twine through the hole.

Tips

Keep ornaments dry. Humidity can make them soft again.
They are not food. Keep them away from small children and pets, because salt is harmful if eaten in large amounts.
