A homemade advent calendar costs less than most store-bought ones and you decide what goes inside. This version uses small bags on a string, so it works on a wall, a door or a branch.

- 24 small kraft paper bags or envelopes See options
- Number stickers 1 to 24 See options
- Twine or thin string See options
- Washi tape See options
- Small clips or clothespins
How to make it
- Put a number sticker from 1 to 24 on each bag.
- Fill each bag with a small gift or a note (see ideas below) and fold the top over.
- Close the bags with a clip or washi tape.
- Stretch twine across a wall, a window or a door frame, or hang it from a branch.
- Clip the bags on in any order, so the surprise lasts.
- Open one bag each day from December 1.
Tips
Filling ideas for kids: a sticker sheet, a small toy, a coin for a savings jar, a joke.
Filling ideas for adults: a tea bag, a coffee voucher, a note with a happy memory, a small chocolate, a favorite song to play.
Mix in a few activity cards, such as 'bake cookies together' or 'watch a Christmas movie'.
